Q: My child is 9 months old and isn't social smiling. Is that normal or should I be worried?

I have read that babies should take part in social smiling when they are 3-4 months old. My son is 9 months old and still doesn't smile when he sees familiar faces or when we sing or play with him. Should I be concerned or am I overreacting?

A: I would be a little alarmed

I have also heard that most babies socially smile at 3-4 months old. This freaked me out because my daughter didn't socially smile until 7 months old. I did see a doctor and she informed me that they usually don't seriously look into the cause of the lack of social smiling until 12 months old. If by 12 months your baby still isn't taking part in social smiling, your doctor may want to test him for autism. Don't freak out like me though until the time comes. My daughter ended up catching on only a month later, so hold out hope that he is just a late bloomer (or maybe he is the more serious type).
