Q: Does Kangaroo Care really work?

I've heard of Kangaroo care where you hold your baby skin-on skin. Does it really have that many benefits?

A: Yes!

To clarify, Kangaroo Care is when you place your baby inside your blouse or shirt (like a Kangaroo pouch- thus the name). This should be done for at least one hour a day and multiple times per week. The skin-on-skin contact can regulate heartbeat, improve sleeping patterns and make breast-feeding easier. So, yes this is a beneficial procedure for both you and your child.

Here are some more suggestions for kangaroo care:
1. Wear a garment that opens in the front.
2. Take your bra off and remove your babies clothes (except their diaper) - this is supposed to be skin on skin.
3. Place your child upright on your chest and cover him/her with your shirt.
4. Lay back and relax.
5. Don't engage your baby - this is supposed to be a relaxing time for you both.

Good luck and happy kangaroo-ing!
