Q: How can I stop my baby from scratching herself?

My newborn daughter keeps scratching her head in her sleep. I try to keep her nails short, but is there anything else I can do to keep her from scratching herself?

A: Keep her nails filed

Make sure that her nails are filed to be smooth and round. That way she can't scratch herself too badly.

A: It's just a sensory thing

You child is scratching because she is exploring her body and her senses. She should outgrow this, but in the meantime, as K.N. stated above, you should make sure that her nails are trimmed so she doesn't hurt herself too much in the process.

A: My child did the same thing!

My son kept on scratching himself on his head and it turned out to be something quite simple - he had a dry scalp! We put a little olive oil on his head and made sure to keep it moisturized with baby lotion and the scratching stopped. It could be as simple as that! Guess it's worth a try.

A: My baby does it too

My 6 month old does it too. I think she scratches because she is learning and it's sort of a comfort thing for her. She does it mostly when she is feeding or getting ready for bed. Maybe it just feels good, I don't know. I'm not a doctor, but I am pretty sure that as long as we keep their little nails trimmed they are going to be alright.

my 5 month old daughter scratches her head, which I understand because we've battled craddle cap 4 our of the 5 months she's been with us..but she also scratches her ears and face, particularily around her eyes so bad she bleeds and has marks. She looks like one giant scratch! What can I do??? Its right at the corners of her eyes, I can't get lotion there..UGH...its so aggrevating because her beautiful face is just ratched because of all the scratch marks. Any other ideas Moms..Please help me!?!

A: ScratchMeNots www.ScratchMeNot.com

It's hard to stop babies from scratching, but we can cover their hands to prevent them from damaging their skin. I've found ScratchMeNots to be rather effective! She can't pull them off either! Sometimes its eczema creeping it, teething or a curiosity. Hope you are able to figure it out!!

A: My son also does same

I have used only oil for the first month then my mom asked me to use G&G, after using this my son got dry skin.

I went to doc and he gave me hydromol, nothing helped and doctor asked me to use diprobase, but no change. My sister in law asked me to use QV cream, currently I am using that.

My 7 months old son is scrathing his hands, legs and neck.

A: Keep mittens/socks on with scotch tape

My son has been suffering from severe eczema since he was two months old and will even scratch himself with his toes! Keeping mittens on him is impossible so I wrap a piece of scotch tape around socks that I put on his hands (plain white ones are better because they don't stand out as much) and it is nearly impossible for him to pull them off. You can also try sewing the baby mittens onto pajamas or long-sleeve body suits to keep them from pulling them off. Good luck!!!

A: My 9 Month Old Son Scratches Himself Everywhere

My son started scratching himself at a couple of months old. We have tried all sorts of creams. None have stopped his scratching.
I am resigned to believeing he will grow out of it. In the meantime I have scratchsleeves. They are designed for babies with eczema and they are a god-send. He can't get them off, they are safe to sleep in and the hand ends are made of silk so they are very gentle when he tries to scratch. I would highly recommend them. I have 2 pairs and inevitably they get dirty, the more pairs you have the better. I got the size 9 - 12 months when he was only 6 months, they were a little bit big but they still didn't come off during night or day and will last longer.
I hope, as all Mums and Dads do, that their baby will grow out of it soon enough. But I don't get myself upset about it anymore.

Hope this helps.
