Q: Does a man's diet play a role in fertility?

My wife and I are trying to get pregnant. She is taking prenatal vitamins and eating extremely healthy. Do I need to be eating the same things she is in order to improve our chances of getting pregnant? Does it matter at all?

A: It can, but it isn't an essential factor

If the father (or future father) has an unhealthy diet, it may lead him to have unhealthy sperm which can affect the chances of getting pregnant. It's not like you have to be on a strict diet, but it wouldn't hurt your chances if you take care of your health, just as your wife is taking care of hers. Studies have shown that men who smoke have greater infertility issues, so if you are smoking or drinking at excess, it would be wise to cut that out during this time.
