Q: How do I stop my two year old from hitting?

I have a pretty good child (no bias of course) but lately she has been hitting her cousins when they are playing together. It's so unlike her gentle nature. What can I do to stop this behavior?

A: Immediately remove her from the situation

It is best to immediately remove her from the situation she is in and from the other child. Let her know that it is not okay to hit and give her a time out. It is important that you do so immediately because most likely your daughter is acting out because she doesn't have the means to verbalize her feelings. By removing her from the situation and letting her know that hitting is not an appropriate response, you are teaching her valuable skills for dealing with her emotions. She may not have all the words she needs to communicate everything she feels, but she will learn through your guidance that using physical force is not the way to handle such situations.
